BUFFALO FIREFIGHTERS ENDORSE CHRIS SCANLON FOR FULL TERM
The Buffalo Professional Firefighters Association (BPFA – IAFF Local 282) today announced its endorsement of interim Mayor Chris Scanlon in the Democratic Party primary scheduled for June 24. Chris Whelan, President of Local 282 said: “For more than a decade, Chris Scanlon acted in the interest and with an awareness of the challenges facing our 700 members and their families, first as the South District Council member, and now as Buffalo Mayor. He has led the charge on initiatives to support Buffalo’s firefighters and to ensure that we have the tools, support, facilities and equipment that we need to best service the residents and businesses of Buffalo.”
Local 282 cited Scanlon’s push for critical equipment upgrades, the purchase of new fire trucks and his support for construction of a state-of-the-art firehouse that opened this year in South Buffalo-replacing a 60-year-old facility.
In remarks offered endorsing Scanlon, Whelan continued, “He advocated for hazard pay and premium bonuses for the firefighters who worked through the COVID-19 pandemic, ensuring that they were recognized for their sacrifice and their service; supported fair contracts for our firefighters, and now he is fighting for state financial resources that will continue to fund the vital programs and services that keep our great City of Buffalo safe.
Our action today should leave no doubt where Local 282 stands. We are proud to endorse Buffalo Mayor Christopher Scanlon for a full four-year term, so that he can continue to be a mayor that fights for all of us, for the city that we love, and are proud to serve.”
