December 27th, 1903 Fireman Donlon of Engine Co. 18 Died in the Line of Duty while operating at a 3+ Alarm Fire at the Stockyards at William and Babcock Sts. The fast moving wind fed fire spread rapidly throughout the wooden structures requiring rapid transmission of alarms. Members of the BFD performed heroic acts of bravery to rescue other fireman, police, workers and hundreds of animals as the blaze devoured anything in its path. It took hours to bring the blaze under control after an exhaustive effort. The next morning, it was discovered that Fireman Donlon was nowhere to be found, last seen performing any task he could at the blaze. His remains were discovered weeks later in the ashes.
