August 16th,1896 Fireman Clarke of Ladder Co.6 Died in the Line of Duty while responding to an Alarm of Fire at Broadway and Lathrop. As the apparatus crossed Sycamore St at Woltz Ave, it was struck by a speeding westbound street car causing the apparatus to roll. Fireman Clarke was riding the step right side step and crushed as the rig rolled ontop of him. Clarke died instantly and 8 other members suffered various degree of injury. The Motorman and Conductor of the Street Car were arrested on scene for speeding and failure to yield.
