April 11th, 1944 Fireman Hawkes of Engine Co. 9 Died in the Line of Duty after being overcome by Carbon Monoxide fumes while attempting to rescue civilians trapped in the basement conveyor room for the coal furnace of the Statler Hotel at 107 Delaware Ave. Twenty members were overcome during the rescue attempts.
