November1st, 1901 Lieutenant Devitt of Engine Co. 6 Died in the Line of Duty while operating at a 3 Alarm Fire at Chicago and Miami Sts. Lieutenant Devitt was on a ladder on the roof of an adjoining building directing crews operating a handline when he was alerted to a swaying cornice above. After rapidly descending the ladder so others could escape, he mis-stepped and fell 40 feet to the ground striking a fire wagon and landing on a pile of scrap metal head first. He was carried to Engine Co. 8's house a block away by the members who were on the ladder with him where he was found to be deceased by a summoned doctor. Lieutenant Devitt was a 20 year veteran and the oldest Lieutenant on the BFD at the time of his death.
