May 9th, 1923 Battalion Chief Nirschel of the 8th Battalion Died in the Line of Duty after supervising operations at a working fire in the basement of a textile store at 1674 Main St. on May 8th. Chief Nirschel entered the building with the crew of Engine Co.16 who quickly became overcome by smoke and fumes. He aided in the rescue of those men before returning to the basement two more times supervising crews under very acrid smoke conditions. The Chief returned to quarters after more than 2 hours operating in the smoke and immediately felt the effects of his inhalation. After waking for bells for another run that wasn't his, the Chief returned to his bunk. He was found laying on the floor by members of Engine Co. 37 but could not be revived. Over a dozen men were overcome at the fire.
