October 6th, 1893 Engineer McMurray of Engine Co.9 Died in the Line of Duty of Injuries received while returning from a small fire on Franklin St. As the Steamer made its way down Tupper St., the horses became freightened and started to run away. Engineer McMurray jumped from his place at the rear of the apparatus and was able to grab the bridle of one horse. The horse kicked him, knocking him down and his legs were run over by the steamer. McMurray was taken to the General Hospital where he died that evening. The steamer crashed into a telegraph pole opposite quarters where it finally stopped.
