August 28th, 1935 Fireman Merzig of Rescue Squad No.1 Died in the Line of Duty after being overcome by fumes while attempting to rescue two workers trapped in a tank at the Mann Bros. Linseed Oil Co. at 352 Ohio St. The filter type mask Fireman Merzig was wearing did not protect him from the toxic gases and he collapsed as soon as he reached the bottom of the tank. It took over a half hour to recover the 3 deceased men.
