December 6th 1925, Captain McCarthy of Engine Co. 27 Died in the Line of Duty of Injuries previously received while supervising operations of his crew at a 2+ Alarm Fire at 500 Smith St. on December 5th. Captain McCarthy was buried by a collapsed wall after coming to the aid of his men who had fallen to the ground when the wall swayed sending the ladder they were on tumbling.The wall then came down on the crew of Engine 27 instantly killing Fireman Schmidt and injuring the others.
