October 30th, 1896 Driver Dickman of Engine Co. 21 Died in the Line of Duty of Injuries received while responding to an Alarm of Fire at 443 Sycamore St. on October 25th. As Dickman steered the massive horses and steamer down Jefferson Ave. they approached a tight stretch between Brown and Sycamore. Driver Dickman steered the apparatus quickly at high speed, causing it to sway, throwing him from his seat. Dickman became tangled and was dragged 300' before the Engineer could grab the reins and slow the beasts with the help of a milkman. Dickman was expected to recover but died 5 days later from his injuries.
