July 27th, 1928 Marine Engineer Lynch of Engine Co. 20 the Fireboat W.S. Grattan Died in the Line of Duty while fighting an Oil barge fire on the Buffalo River at the rear of the Atlas Oil Co. on Elk St. Engineer Lynch and the crew of the Fireboat Grattan were forced to abandon ship and dive into flaming waters after the boat caught fire while attempting to extinguish the floating blaze which burned 3 ships and hundreds of feet of wooden docks. Engineer Lynch was severely burned and drowned while attempting to swim to safety. The blaze still today was one of the largest waterfront fires in Buffalo's history.
