July 21st, 1887 Captain John Manning of Engine Co. 6 Died in the Line of Duty of Injuries received while operating 3 Alarm Fire at the Ziegele Brewery at Washington and Virginia Sts. Captain Manning was struck by a falling cornice while advancing a handline up a ladder. Captain Manning and a Lieutenant of Engine 5 fell to the ground. Captain Manning suffered burns and internal injuries and died a few hours later. Captain Manning was a Veteran Foreman of Engine Co.6.
