May 8th, 1902 Fireman Kennel of Engine Co. 18 Died in the Line of Duty from Injuries previously received while operating at a 3+ Alarm Fire at Elk and Illinois Sts at the Wells Elevator on May 4th. Fireman Kennell was operating a handline with his crew and two others when a tremendous explosion occurred about 4 hours into the blaze bringing down the remains of the burned out shell. Fireman Kennell and his Lieutenant were buried in the debris. Kennel was found under several feet of debris and taken to the Emergency Hospital. He died after making slight improvement the day before.
