April 25th, 1894 Driver Rittling of Ladder Co. 7 Died in the Line of Duty while responding to a reported fire at Puffer St and Jefferson Ave. While responding down Main St, Rittling was stricken and fell from his seat while steering the apparatus. Two men were able to gain control of the horses finally stopping the rig at Delevan Ave. Members hurriedly made there way to Rittling who was carried into St.Vincents Church already deceased.
