March 25th, 1885 Fireman Roth of Engine Co. 3 Died in the Line of Duty while attempting to rescue two trapped boys at a General Alarm Fire at Main and Edward Sts. While operating at a fire at the German Music Hall, embers ignited the steeple of St.Louis Church. As Engine 3 advanced a handline up the steeple, it was learned two boys were trapped above the fire. Fireman Roth and a Bricklayer made their way up to attempt a rescue when they became trapped. Both men eventually fell into the flaming church. Fireman Roth's body was located the next day. Fireman Roth was a 5 year veteran of the BFD.
