Jun 02, 2023
January 12th, 1894 Driver O'Brien of Engine Co. 24 Died in the Line of Duty while returning from a pulled street box at Main St and Leroy Ave. As the apparatus neared the New York Central Tracks at Jewett Ave., O'Brien spotted a Locomotive coming down the tracks. Unable to stop the horses, O'Brien sped up the team to try and cross faster. The train struck the steamer dead center throwing the steamer and its horse team in opposite directions. O'Briens legs were crushed and he suffered massive head trauma. Dr. Roswell Park amputated his legs at The General Hospital in an attempt to save his life. O'Brien died that morning. Engine Co. 24 was organized just two weeks before. O'Brien unfortunately the quickest member to die in a company after it was formed. The Box they responded to was pulled by a cop who saw smoke from a fire in the opposite direction.
